The Bowie Family share Torres Strait Islander lifestyle and culture through food, storytelling, teaching and learning. The family business began more than 35 years ago with father and grandfather, Albert Bowie, cooked for his daughter's school class using traditional Torres Strait Islander methods. This activity grew into Bowie Catering, where we now share Torres Strait Islander flavours and traditional cooking methods such as Amai (Kapmauri) — an earth-oven style of cooking.
Since the mid-1990s, the Bowie family's businesses have grown to include storytelling, cultural presentations, weaving, and yarning through Bowie Solutions, where we help students learn about Torres Strait Islander history, identity, and connection to land and sea in a respectful and engaging way with questions, creativity, and understanding.
Working together as a family is central to the Bowies. Business has strengthened their family bond, taught them about teamwork, and helped the family become positive role models for other families and individuals. Through food and stories, the Bowie family inspire young people to be proud of who they are, respect others, and value culture and learning.
