Turning the page: Addressing declining literacy rates through joy, community and access

Australia is facing a decline in both literacy outcomes and reading for pleasure. Turning the page explores the growing body of research demonstrating that while teaching children how to read is essential, fostering the desire to read is equally critical to lifelong literacy, learning and wellbeing.

Drawing on national and international research, alongside Storyfest's own evidence-informed approach, this paper examines how joy, equitable access to books and strong reading communities can help remove barriers to reading and inspire lifelong readers. It also outlines the role literary festivals and community partnerships can play in supporting educational outcomes and creating meaningful opportunities for young people.

Commissioned by Storyfest and written by Bond University lecturers Dr Caroline Graham and Dr Oscar Davis, Turning the page offers valuable insights for educators, librarians, policymakers, community organisations and anyone committed to improving literacy outcomes for young people.
